Scaletta dello Scorlazzino

Scaletta dello Scorlazzino

Description

The most particular and “local” way to move from Lower to Upper Bergamo is the “scalette”, our ancient flights of stone steps. They are exclusively pedestrian pathways, paved with the typical cobblestones.
Their steps climb up to the Upper Town, bordered by old dry stone walls, crossing fields, terraced gardens and beautiful mansions: with every step you’ll take, a new amazing landscape will appear. However, the “scalette” are also a beloved place for runners to workout, being far from the traffic, quiet and charming.

The Scorlazzino climbs up from San Martino della Pigrizia street with a peculiar double access: the main one, almost at the crossroads with Borgo Canale street, similarly to the Scorlazzone (which you will find at the top), the other at the mouth of the San Martino stairs, which begin in a lower part of Borgo Canale street.
The Scorlazzino is one of the best-known routes among the medieval stairs, made charming not only by the gardens and orchards it crosses, but also by its considerable panoramic view: it encompasses in fact a wide part of Lower Bergamo, including the area of the Tempio dei Caduti, the bell tower of which can be easily seen.
Once at the top, you will be able to choose wether to continue the climb on the Scorlazzone - a natural extension of the itinerary - and reach the St. Vigilio hill, or to turn right and reach Colle Aperto.

For sport lovers

Combining the Scorlazzino and the Scorlazzone’s itineraries, you can reach 120 meters of height difference, running from via San Martino della Pigrizia up to the castle of San Vigilio! Not bad, for a jog…
