TAGLIAFERRI MOUNTAIN REFUGE

TAGLIAFERRI MOUNTAIN REFUGE

Description

At 2328m above sea level, the Tagliaferri mountain refuge is located in the Scalve Valley and is managed by Francesco Tagliaferri, the creator of the refuge project named after his brother who died in the Peruvian Andes in the eighties and manager for 33 years.

It takes time and effort to get to Tagliaferri: an excursion into the wild nature of the Scalve Valley. It starts from Ronco di Schilpario, taking the mule track that climbs steadily along the Vo valley, along a challenging 4-hour route. There is a shorter access trail from Valtellina from the Belviso Lakes taking 2 and a half hours.

There are 50 beds and many seats: the indoor room has 50 seats and the outdoor tables have 100 seats.

It is characterised by a zero-km cuisine and slow cooking, because house specialties such as lamb chops boiled in butter require hours of work and cooking. Pride of refuge is the cellar stocked with alpine herb grappas, precious wine and whisky arriving directly from Scotland.

The environment is characteristic and interesting not only for the numerous lakes scattered on the slopes of the surrounding mountains but also for the flora and fauna, in fact the area is protected by the Valbelviso-Barbellino wildlife reserve.
