Sant'Egidio in Fontanella Abbey

Sant'Egidio in Fontanella Abbey

Description

Visiting this enchanting abbey, established one thousand years ago, you will experience the very same atmosphere of knights, crusades and religious mysteries. Surrounded by the lush forests of the mount Canto, this church kept its charming and austere Romanesque architecture, decorated by the fragments of ancient frescoes, which used to cover its walls. In this lovely place, the monks of Cluny used to live a life of meditation and prayers. The monks don’t live here anymore, but you can still feel like you’re in the Middle Age while you walk across these buildings.

Out of curiosity:

Outside the church, an ancient sepulchre is located in a very unusual position. No one knows to whom it is destined or why it is on the churchyard. However, this is not the only mysterious burial. In the cloister there is another tomb whose cover is decorated with a young girl figure. Tradition has it that it represents the mythical Teopega, sister of Saint Albert from Prezzate, the founder of this Abbey.
