Fontana di Sant'Agostino

Fontana di Sant'Agostino

Description

Refined welcoming ornament, the fountain was built in 1575 during the construction of the Venetian walls (1561-1588), facing the homonymous city Gate.

The materials used for the construction were grey sandstone for the structure and marble coming from the nearby quarries of Zandobbio for the embellishments. The names of Francesco Longo and Marc'Antonio Memo, rectors of the city when the fountain was built, are engraved in the upper part on the marble medallions.

The fountain was fed by the Prato Baglioni aqueduct, now dry, which originated in Colle Aperto, ran along the northern side of the hill and ended in the borough of Pignolo.
