The end of a journey – or a return to the origins? In front of the large canvas at Villa di Serio, the question arises. Made in 1625, shortly before the artist’s death, this large Trinitarian scene has the flavor of a balance sheet. At the top the divine vision, at the bottom the saints in adoration: a solemn, complex and rich composition, confidently constructed. And yet, between the folds of the image, distant echoes resurface, references to early works, as if Salmeggia’s journey closed by returning to his beginnings.
A painting that holds together fulfillment and memory, maturity and return to origins.
