A place of rare beauty and expressive power, rich in works of art.

Description

Located in the historic center of Alzano Lombardo, just outside Bergamo toward the Serina Valley, the Basilica di San Martino was awarded the title of minor basilica in 1922 by Pope Pius XI.

The earliest records concerning the basilica date back to the year 1023, when the church was very small in size, and the present structure dates back to the 17th century.

A three-aisled building with five bays each, and the nave is the tallest and widest.

There are eight chapels, each dedicated to a saint or sacrament.
There are sculptures, inlays and paintings in each chapel.

Important pictorial cycles can be admired including Agar by Giovanni Carnovali.

In addition to the Basilica of San Martino, one can visit the San Martino Museum of Sacred Art, located in the structure called The Palace.
In 14 rooms, the museum traces the historical periods of the Basilica’s birth and development.
