The Abbey of Pontida, founded in the 11th century, is an important center of spirituality and medieval history. The monastic complex is traditionally linked to the Oath of 1167, the event in which the Lombard cities united to oppose Frederick Barbarossa, giving rise to the Lombard League. Today, the complex is home to a community of Benedictine monks.

The guided tour allows you to explore the monastery’s main architectural and artistic features:

  • Basilica of St. James: a 14th-century building that houses sculptures such as the bas-reliefs on the tomb of St. Albert.
  • Cloisters: two spaces characterized by an atmosphere of silence, an integral part of monastic life.
  • Renaissance sacristy: an architectural feature that houses several artistic treasures.
  • Chapter House: a place set aside for community decision-making and prayer.
  • Monastery Museum: a space dedicated to preserving the historical and spiritual heritage of the site.
