The conference marks the second stage of the project “Piazza Duomo and Its Institutions,” an in-depth exploration aimed at reconstructing the history of Bergamo’s religious and institutional heart. Following the first event, which focused on antiquity and the Middle Ages, this edition examines the period spanning the 15th to the 18th centuries—a crucial phase in the city’s architectural, artistic, and civic development.
This study focuses on how the Renaissance, the Tridentine era, and the subsequent Catholic Reformation transformed the city center through new buildings, functions, and commissions. This analysis allows us to interpret Piazza Duomo as a layering of history and material culture, where architectural structures serve as sources for understanding the relationship between institutions and the local area.
