Mountain Week is back with an edition dedicated to the theme “The Forest We Live In.” The program features nine days of events throughout the Val Gandino region, designed to foster an understanding of the mountain environment through hikes, family activities, talks, readings, and experiences focused on local flora and fauna.

Schedule of appointments

Saturday, September 12

  • “The Forest for Everyone”: an inclusive hike departing at 8:30 a.m. from Fontanei in Gandino or from the parking lot below Malga Lunga. Three trails to Baita Monte Alto are available, led by hiking groups and the CAI. A concert by the Coro Liberi Suoni choir is scheduled at the end of the hike. Registration is required.
  • “Among Woods and Memories”: Readings aloud from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the garden of the Fondazione Cecilia Caccia retirement home on Del Negro Street in Gandino.

Sunday, September 13

  • “La Cascinata”: a family walk in Casnigo from 8:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. to explore the farms of Val Gandino and sample local products. Registration required.
  • “The Peia Treasure Hunt”: an activity through the woods and along trails featuring puzzles and challenges, starting at the Oratory of Peia at 8:30 a.m. Registration is required.

Monday, September 14

  • “In the Dark Woods – Mysteries Among the Branches”: readings and a book display at the Casnigo Library at 4:30 p.m.

Tuesday, September 15

  • “Face to Face with the Trees”: an exploration of Gandino Municipal Park from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., organized by the WeCare Group and followed by a guided tour led by arborist Gualtiero Moreni. Registration required.

Wednesday, September 16

  • “La Biblioteca del Bosco”: creative activities, storytime, and crafts for children ages 3 to 8 at the Leffe Library at 4:30 p.m.

Thursday, September 17

  • “Forest Management”: an in-depth discussion featuring a presentation by forestry expert Nicola Gallinaro at the Gandino Library at 8:45 p.m.

Friday, September 18

  • “The Call of the Forest – Wild Ungulates and the Love Lives of Deer”: a wildlife talk at the Monte Farno Infopoint in Gandino at 7:00 p.m., followed by a nighttime outing with binoculars led by wildlife specialist Nicolò Mottadelli. Registration is required.

Saturday, September 19

  • “The Green Secrets of the Forest – Identifying, Gathering, and Using Wild Herbs”: a guided identification and gathering activity led by Dr. Eleonora Moro, departing from the Peia Library at 4:30 p.m. Registration is required.

Sunday, September 20

  • “Trail della Lana”: a mountain race along the ancient wool trade routes. The race is scheduled to start on Saturday, September 20, at 8:00 a.m. from the Oratory of Peia. Two routes are available: 20 and 34 kilometers. Registration is required.

Additional Information

  • From September 14 to 19, citizen science activities are planned for elementary and secondary schools in the Gandino and Leffe school districts as part of a tree census.
