Thanks to a donation from the Banca Popolare di Bergamo Foundation, from November 2025 you can admire the Great Cardinal standing at the center of Piazza Giacomo Carrara, in the heart of a true cultural district that unites Accademia Carrara, Oratorio di San Lupo for the Bernareggi Museum, GAMeC and, soon, the latter’s new home.
The impressive sculpture has been placed in the green area of the square, on a base of local sandstone. You can thus enjoy a cozy and evocative view, perfectly harmonized with the surroundings, ideal for a relaxing break in the shade of the trees and in the embrace of the nearby historic buildings.
The work is one of the most intense and monumental by Giacomo Manzù, among the absolute protagonists of 20th-century Italian art. With its entry into urban art-historical décor, it also expands the “diffuse museum” dedicated by Bergamo to Manzù, an itinerary that already includes the Monument to the Partisan, the Lovers and the Cardinal Of the Palace of the Province.
