Four centuries have not severed the bond between Enea Salmeggia and the region where he worked. His works continue to live on in the churches of the Bergamo area, within the places and communities for which they were painted. On the 400th anniversary of the artist’s death, the Municipality of Albino and the Adriano Bernareggi Foundation are thus bringing Salmeggia back into the spotlight with the exhibition *Enea Salmeggia: The Naturalness of Miracles*, on view from October 11 through December 13 at the Church of San Bartolomeo.

A project that renews the Bernareggi Museum’s commitment to using cultural heritage as a starting point for building relationships, knowledge, and new forms of cultural development in local communities. And in the case of Salmeggia, this means revisiting an artist through the tangible geography of his works: the churches, villages, and communities of the Bergamo area that still preserve his legacy today.

Albino’s exhibition fits squarely within this context. Set in the elegant surroundings of the Church of San Bartolomeo—recently enriched by two paintings by Salmeggia from the ancient church of Ripa in Desenzano—the exhibition offers a comparison of some of the central themes in his work: devotion and memory, nature and style, classicism and everyday life.

What emerges is the profile of an artist capable of creating paintings that are both cultured and rooted in everyday life, in which the sacred dimension is never separated from the human experience. It is this particular sense of naturalness that makes his work recognizable even today: the miraculous enters everyday life, taking shape in the faces, gestures, landscapes, and concrete spaces of the communities for which Salmeggia painted.

The project also stems from the intersection of cultural heritage and the younger generation. In fact, the exhibition will also feature the perspectives of students from the Romero High School in Albino and the young people involved in the “Le Vie del Sacro” project, who have been invited to engage with the works and the history of the places that house them.

A way to celebrate the 400th anniversary—not only by honoring the memory of a great artist, but also by reexamining the relationship between his works and the region that still hosts them today.
