The introductory course serves as a starting point for anyone interested in exploring ceramics. Through hands-on experience in the studio, participants can learn the main techniques for shaping clay, create their first pieces, and acquire the skills needed to embark on a creative journey.

During the classes, students will explore modeling techniques—pizzicato, colombino, and slab building—as well as decoration with engobes. The course involves working with red clay from Montelupo Fiorentino to learn about the characteristics of different ceramic clays, decorative techniques, and the main types of firing.

The program calls for the creation of:

  • a small bowl made using the pizzicato technique;
  • a vase made using the colombino technique;
  • A square-based box made using the slab technique.

The pieces will be decorated with engobes—earthy coatings applied to the piece when it reaches a leather-like hardness. After the first firing, a transparent glaze is applied to make the objects waterproof and lustrous, followed by a second firing. The pieces will be ready for pickup at the studio about three or four weeks after the end of the course. This module serves as preparation for the advanced course.
