Engraved lines, textured surfaces, and color contrasts make sgraffito one of the most fascinating decorative techniques in ceramics. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to decorate raw clay by scratching away the engobe to create botanical, geometric, or abstract patterns with your own personal touch.

Sgraffito is an ancient technique that continues to express a surprisingly contemporary aesthetic, capable of highlighting the material and the uniqueness of each piece.

During the workshop, you’ll prepare sketches, learn about the tools used to engrave the surface, and learn how to apply engobe—a coating made of clay, pigments, and crystalline material that comes in a variety of shades.

You will transfer the design onto the clay—either freehand or with the help of light guide lines—and bring it out by scratching and carving away the surface layer of engobe, revealing the natural color of the clay beneath.

You will be provided with a tile, prepared for hanging, and a cylindrical vase, both supplied by the workshop.

At the end of the workshop, I will handle the first firing, the application of the transparent glaze, and the second firing. Your pieces will then be ready for you to pick up and use.
