The play “Napoleon: The Death of God,” written and directed by Davide Sacco, is inspired by Victor Hugo’s work and stars Lino Guanciale in the lead role. The production explores the themes of grief and the relationship with the father figure, interweaving the personal with the broader historical narrative.

The story begins with the return of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte’s body to France. The text draws on Victor Hugo’s essay “The Funeral of Napoleon” to tell the story of a son grappling with the pain of loss while the city of Paris is engrossed in the funeral rites. The work does not aim for a rigorous historical reconstruction, but uses these epic events as a starting point to explore the human and personal dimension of those who live in the shadow of a myth.
