The play “Brother Sun, Sister Moon” recounts the story of Francis of Assisi and his message of brotherhood and peace. The production is part of the celebrations marking the 800th anniversary of the saint’s death.
The opera is inspired by Franco Zeffirelli’s 1972 film, renowned for the poetic power of its imagery and the music by Riz Ortolani. The stage adaptation employs a contemporary style and is based on the original screenplay by Suso Cecchi D’Amico, written in collaboration with Zeffirelli and Lina Wertmüller, with an adaptation by Angela Demattè.

The production is directed by Piero Maccarinelli and features an artistic team that alternates between acting and singing in an ensemble-driven narrative. The music from the original film has been rearranged for the stage by Alessandro Nidi, who also composed several pieces created specifically for this project.
