The Church of San Lorenzo is located in Ghisalba, a town on the Bergamo plain 18 km from Bergamo, set along the banks of the Serio River.
The church is a small jewel that, in appearance, closely resembles the famous Pantheon in Rome.
It was designed by architect Luigi Cagnola, the same who built the Arch of Peace in Milan.
The building is of pure neoclassical style; finished and opened in 1834.
The present temple stands on the area once occupied by a church erected in the late 5th century on the ruins of a pagan temple dedicated to Jupiter.
The entrance to the temple is preceded by a portico with 14 columns.
Once through the large doorway, one finds oneself in a very impressive circular room with a beam of light in the center of the church, raining down from the dome, and plays of light and shadow created by the glow of the 12 large windows.
The church of San Lorenzo is located in the historic center of Ghisalba, just a short walk from the Serio Park bike path that runs up the river to Seriate among cultivated fields and low vegetation.
