Bergamo is located in the heart of northern Italy, in the center of the Lombardy region.
Its location is ideal for visiting all of northern Italy; it is only 40 km from Milan and Brescia and only two hours from Venice and Turin. In a short time you can reach Lake Como and Lake Garda and all the major tourist attractions in the area.
Milan Bergamo International Airport, just 5 kilometers from the city, is an international airport with more than 130 connected destinations.
A shuttle bus departs from the airport for the city center every 20 minutes. This is the ATB Line 1 bus, which runs daily from 4:50 a.m. to approximately 1:30 a.m. (starting at 6:30 a.m. on holidays), with stops at the train station, Porta Nuova (Città Bassa center), the lower station of the funicular, and finally Città Alta (last stop: Colle Aperto). The bus stop is No. 1, located in the airport’s Arrivals plaza.
From downtown Bergamo, you can reach the airport via the ATB Line 1 Aeroporto, which runs every 20 minutes starting at 4:30 a.m. (Station stop) until around 1:00 a.m.
From the airport to the city, as well as from the city to the airport, you’ll need a single-ride ticket (Fare C ) (€3). If you purchase a 24-hour pass (entire network – €8.50) or a 72-hour pass (entire network – €14.50), the airport route is included.

Bergamo is directly connected with Milan, Lecco and Brescia. Travel time from Milan and Brescia is about 50 minutes, about 40 instead from Lecco. The city’s FS train station is located in Piazzale Guglielmo Marconi, right in the center of town.
An ATB bus (Line 1a) departs from the train station every ten minutes to the lower station of the funicular railway, by which Bergamo Alta is reached.
From Milan Lampugnano and Milan San Donato it is possible to reach the Bergamo Bus Station by Bus Flixbus, Itabus and Nord Est Trasporti (line Z301).

For tour buses accompanying groups visiting the city, free parking is available on Via Spino—Market Area, open every day except when the local market is held (usually on Mondays).
A brief stop is permitted, just long enough for passengers to get off, at 34 Viale Vittorio Emanuele II (at the stop used by ATB city buses). The funicular station is just a 1- to 2-minute walk from there.
Access to Upper Town is prohibited for private vehicles longer than 10.5 m and taller than 3 m, under penalty.
With Bergamo Easy Access, you can book a transfer service to the Upper Town via city bus.
Thanks to the convenient pickup points near Porta Nuova (Via Camozzi 11) or Piazzale Goisis (Stadium), its capacity of 60 to 80 seats (55/75 when accommodating a passenger in a wheelchair), and its full accessibility, this ATB service is an excellent solution for groups of travelers who want to get around downtown without worrying about finding parking or a seat on regular city buses.

By car: always accessible for parking
Access to Bergamo Alta for parking is always allowed, every day and at any time, even when ZTL is active.
It is important to know that theonly authorizedentry point is the Conca d’Oro Gallery traffic circle on Viale Vittorio Emanuele II; from there you then reach Porta S. Agostino and through it you can enter the old town. Access is free.
During the hours of operation of the ZLT Città Alta and Colli, once you enter you must park within 30 minutes in one of the dedicated parking spaces: Upper Town Parking Via della Fara, Three Arms Parking on Via delle Tre Armi or Porta S. Alessandro parking lot in wide St. Alexander’s Gate. Failure to park in one of these parking spaces would in fact result in a penalty.

What has been said so far concerns the “outermost” part of the borough, such as Viale delle Mura, Via della Fara and Via Borgo Canale.
It is important to remember that the Upper Town Historic Center is not freely passable: transit and parking are prohibited here, unless specifically authorized.
N.B. Customers of accommodations and restaurants with parking (reserved) may contact their respective managers to request special passes for access to the Upper Town Historic Center.
By motorcycle or scooter: a freer solution
Motorcycles and scooters can always pass through the areas ZTL Upper Town and Hills e ZTL Valverde, even when there are hourly restrictions for cars. Instead, access to the Historic Center of the Upper Town.
On foot or by transport: the best way to get there
Città Alta is easily reached even without a car. The most practical way is to take line 1, the bus that conveniently connects Lower Town with the upper part of Bergamo.
For a relaxing visit we recommend reaching the old town directly by bus, getting off at the terminus, Colle Aperto. From there you can reach the old town in less than a minute, and at the end of the day take the historic funicular railway down and back, enjoying the view along the walls.
For lovers of walking, a wonderful alternative are the characteristic medieval stairways, perfect for experiencing the town step by step, entering its unique atmosphere little by little.
