The performance draws on the folk traditions associated with the twelve nights leading up to Christmas, using the format of a ballad—a story that is both narrated and sung. The production features two characters who tell the story of the bandit “Spezzaferro” and his horse “Ay Carmela,” along with Saint Lucy and her little donkey.
The story follows the adventures of a group of characters—including Catina, Annina, the old woman Fepè, and other residents of a small village—who are caught up in a bandit’s attempt to attack the villagers. The story concludes with the intervention of Saint Lucy, which leads to the bandit’s transformation.
