In the heart of Città Alta awaits you one of the most fascinating places in Bergamo’s cultural history, reopened to the public: theformer Athenaeum of Sciences, Letters and Arts, now fully restored and entrusted to the Angelo Mai Civic Library.
A new chapter for the elegant neoclassical building, in short, returning to its original splendor but with an eye toward the future. The goal? To return the former Athenaeum to its historical identity and, at the same time, make it a lively and open place, ready to host events and cultural projects.
Among the most fascinating new features are the relocation of the twenty plaster medallions dedicated to the illustrious Bergamasks of the 19th century, the restoration of the entrance door on Piazza Reginaldi Giuliani, and new lighting, which enhances the stained-glass arches even in the evening hours. All completed by new furniture – tables and chairs generously donated by the Inner Wheel Club of Bergamo.
And if you want to discover what the Athenaeum was like in 1856, a public engagement project of the University of Bergamo will show you its ancient face. Dive into its immersive digital reconstruction and explore its spaces as you move among the historic furnishings, sculptures and picture galleries!
The new former Athenaeum is an invitation to rediscover the city’s history in a space that is once again pulsating with life and culture.
