An extraordinary journey into the very heart of the Val Seriana, amid ancient mines, wild landscapes, and places of deep spirituality in the picturesque Val del Riso\u2014a valley that still preserves vivid traces of its extraordinary mining past. For centuries, precious minerals such as blende, galena, and calamine were mined from these mountains; these were used to produce zinc, lead, and sulfuric acid, fueling an economy that was vital to the entire region. <\/p>\n
The mines in the area were first opened by the Romans over two thousand years ago and were also worked by the infamous \u201cdamnata ad metalla\u201d\u2014those condemned to hard labor and sent to the hell of the mines.<\/p>\n
After meeting up in Oneta, we\u2019ll head to Plassa on a short but scenic 10-minute walk through nature to reach the extraordinary Foghera mine. Having been made safe and opened to the public only very recently, it is still virtually unknown to the general public. <\/p>\n
After this journey through the valley\u2019s history, we\u2019ll drive in our own cars to the picturesque Sanctuary of the Madonna del Frassino, situated in a spectacular panoramic spot overlooking the Val del Riso. To reach it, we\u2019ll drive up a short hill for about 5 minutes. The sanctuary, dating back to 1502, holds a rich history of faith and devotion: here, according to tradition, in 1512 the Virgin Mary appeared to the young Pierina Carobbio, known to everyone as Petruccia, in a place dominated by a large ash tree that later gave the sanctuary its name. Inside the small, intimate church lies an extraordinary artistic treasure: the luminous Polyptych of the Visitation created by the Santacroce family, a renowned family of painters originally from the Brembana Valley who were also active in Venice. A refined and intense work, capable of surprising visitors with its beauty and spirituality. <\/p>\n
For those who wish, at the end of the tour, you can make your own way down to the nearby Oneta Ethnographic Museum to round out the experience with a further immersion in the valley\u2019s traditions and history.<\/p>\n","price":"
