The seal is also part of our collective imagination\u2014that of letters sealed with wax, engraved dies, and documents authenticated for centuries through a single imprint. It is much more than a simple stamp. Behind that mark, however, there are also stories of power, authority, and preservation\u2014and above all, people and documents that have spanned the centuries. \u201cImprint and Mark. Seals: From Material to Document\u201d is the exhibition that, from September 26 to December 23, brings together documents and seals preserved by the Angelo Mai Civic Library and Historical Archives, the Bergamo State Archives, and the Diocesan Historical Archives. Born out of a collaboration between the city\u2019s three main institutions dedicated to the preservation of archival heritage, the initiative offers an exhibition dedicated to one of the most significant elements of historical documentation. The seal, created from an engraved die and imprinted on various materials, has for centuries accompanied documents and letters as a sign of authority and authenticity. It made it possible to identify the issuer of a document and confirm its validity, while also protecting it from tampering. The exhibition brings together the results of restoration, research, and conservation efforts carried out in recent years by the three Bergamo institutions, which are now displayed together across two venues. At Casa Suardi, located at Piazza Vecchia 8, various types of seals and materials are on display, spanning a chronological range defined by the exhibition from the mid-9th century to 1931, with documents including the Carolingian diploma of Lothair I and the papal bull of Gregory XVI. On display are wax seals, paper-backed wax seals, lead seals, adhesive seals, and pendant seals, as well as documents bearing more than one seal. At the Bergamo State Archives, located at Via Fratelli Bronzetti 26, the exhibition also features a tactile section designed for blind and visually impaired visitors, with displays that allow them to explore the structure of the seals and restored documents. <\/p>\n
