heritage.

The Church of San Rocco

A church that has been closed to the public for years, a historical and artistic heritage to be preserved, and a community called upon to rediscover one of the places that is part of its history.

On Friday, October 2, and Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 8:45 p.m., the Church of San Rocco in Brignano Gera d’Adda will be the focus of two evenings organized by the Parish of Santa Maria Assunta and the Giovanni Secco Suardo Association, marking the conclusion of the project “Restoration and Enhancement of the Ancient Church of San Rocco.”

This project arose from the need to restore a building that, after years of being closed and abandoned, was facing significant conservation issues: ranging from the deterioration of the wooden and masonry structures to problems with the roof, as well as the deterioration of the decorated surfaces and frescoes.

Launched in late summer 2025, the project led to the restoration of the church’s roof and, at the same time, to the launch of an initiative to explore and study the building and the works it houses.

The project was carried out with the support of Fondazione Cariplo, as part of the “SOS Patrimonio 2025” call for proposals.

Friday, October 2: An Evening of Restoration and History

The first evening, Friday, October 2, at 8:45 p.m., will be dedicated to the work carried out on the church and the new insights that emerged during the project: the restoration project will be discussed by Marco Ermentini, architect and project manager, and Maria Cristina Regini, restoration specialist.

One of the highlights of the evening will be the presentation of the book *La chiesa di San Rocco a Brignano Gera d’Adda: Recupero, conoscenza e restauro* (The Church of San Rocco in Brignano Gera d’Adda: Preservation, Research, and Restoration), published by the Giovanni Secco Suardo Association and Lubrina Bramani Editore.

The book compiles and presents the body of knowledge developed in conjunction with the conservation work, helping to reconstruct the history of the church and its heritage.

The book will be presented by Enrico De Pascale, art historian and editor of the volume, and Paolo Mazzariol, architect, historical researcher, and author.

The presentations will be interspersed with musical pieces by French composers, selected as a tribute to Saint Roch, a native of Montpellier, and performed by the duo consisting of Stefania Dahba Awalom on the harp and Angela Rahia Awalom on the cello.

Saturday, October 3: Music at the Church of San Rocco

The second evening, Saturday, October 3, at 8:45 p.m., will be entirely dedicated to music.

The Autarena Basilica Instrumental Quartet, featuring Marco Bianchi on first violin, Ágnes Kertész on second violin, Diego Mecca on viola, and Antonio Papetti on cello, will perform Joseph Haydn’s *The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross*, Op. 51 (1787).

This will be followed by *Fulgur Conditum*, a musical performance by Massimiliano Milesi on saxophones and Filippo Sala on drums and percussion, created in memory of the lightning strike of June 4, 1916—an event linked to the church’s history.

20:45 – 23:00

131 Vittorio Emanuele II
