“Novecento” chronicles fifty years of Italian history (from 1900 to 1945) through the friendship and conflict between two men born on the same day on a large estate in Emilia: Olmo, the son of farmers and a future socialist leader, and Alfredo, the heir to wealthy landowners. Their parallel lives embody the class struggle of an entire century, marked by the decline of the old landowners, the rise of the labor movements, the oppressive violence of fascism, and the subsequent liberation by the partisans. <\/p>\n
