Located on Via della Boccola, under the church of San Lorenzo, the Lantro Fountain is an extraordinary underground cistern of very ancient origin. It was first mentioned in a document of 928, from which we learn the etymology of the name “Lantro” (Later, meaning “cavern of water”) was used for the supply of water for domestic use, for tanning hides, for washing clothes and animals were led there to drink. The Later supplied water to the population until the late 19th century, when the municipal aqueduct came into operation. <\/p>\n
Featuring large stone vaults supported by a central column and a basin capable of about 400 cubic meters of water, it represents one of the most striking examples of historic hydraulic architecture in Bergamo. <\/p>\n
The role of the Gruppo Speleologico Bergamasco Le Nottole (Bergamasque Speleological Group), which has been active for more than 50 years in the study and enhancement of the city’s underground passages, played a key role in the recovery of the Fountain, returned to the city after decades of neglect.<\/p>\n
The openings of the Fountain of the Lantro are part of the broader path of enhancement of the city’s historical and cultural heritage, in particular of the UNESCO site “Venetian defense works between the 16th and 17th centuries: Stato da Terra – Stato da Mar Occidentale” of which the Fountain is one of the constituent elements of the attribute “Cisterns and water system” of the Bergamo component. A recognition that engages the city not only in the protection, but also in the knowledge and conscious enjoyment of its assets, making accessible lesser-known but fundamental places for understanding urban history and identity. <\/p>\n
Access is regulated to ensure the safety of visitors: quota groups (maximum 15 people at a time), requirement of closed shoes with non-slip soles, and some limitations related to the nature of the hypogeal site.<\/p>\n","price":"
