From March 21 to September 27, the halls of Palazzo delle Paure in Lecco are hosting a major exhibition dedicated to the Japanese master, entitled “Hokusai. The Secret of the Wave that Crosses Europe.”<\/p>\n","hero_title":"Hokusai","indepth":"
Curated by Paolo Linetti, director of the Museo d’Arte Orientale Collezione Mazzocchi in Coccaglio (BS), produced and realized by ViDi cultural and Ponte43, in collaboration with the Municipality of Lecco and the Sistema Museale Urbano Lecchese, under the patronage of the Consulate General of Japan in Milan, the exhibition presents 43 works by Hokusai, documenting some aspects of his stylistic evolution, whose signature lies in analyzing and understanding nature and then transfiguring it into something universal. <\/p>\n
Lecco, a city of water, could not but welcome an initiative that had as its main protagonist this natural element that plays a central role in the production of Hokusai, an author capable like no other of capturing every nuance, from the roar of waterfalls to the crashing of waves, and transforming it into the absolute protagonist of each of his works, a symbol of strength, change and eternity.<\/p>\n
The review, moreover, insists on investigating Hokusai’s adherence to Western classical canons through the use of harmonic principles; this fact may explain the great success of Hokusai’s works in the West, which are appreciated even by those who possess sensitivities and cultural and visual matrices far removed from those peculiar to the Eastern world. <\/p>\n
The exhibition revolves around The Great Wave off Kanagawa, the Japanese master’s most iconic and well-known masterpiece and one of the world’s most recognizable images, which has captivated the unconscious of both Japanese and Westerners.<\/p>\n
Of the Great Wave, the compositional scheme is analyzed and revealed, constructed using an architectural code on which to arrange lines, angles and figures that the viewer’s eye perceived as harmonious, balanced and elegant.<\/p>\n
In particular, two geometric patterns, found by Paolo Linetti in 2021, that the master used to construct most of his works are displayed. Such patterns are well recognizable in his later creations and more carefully executed drawings, and offer a unique key to understanding the genesis of his genius. <\/p>\n
Hokusai, over the span of his artistic production, would continue his quest in immortalizing the perfect wave; Palazzo delle Paure will reveal how they evolve and transform over time, compositional details such as curls of foam, froth and masses of water. Or, Fuji as seen from the sea, a woodcut contained in the second volume of The Hundred Views of Mount Fuji, made between 1834 and 1835; in this case, the water takes on a monumental yet pacified dimension, abandoning the violence of its famous counterpart in Kanagawa, accompanying the viewer’s gaze in a harmonious flow devoid of emotional tension. The great mass of water culminates in a foam that disintegrates into fragments, evoking plovers, coastal birds that, according to legend, are born from the foam of the waves. <\/p>\n
If the Kanagawa Wave embodies a destructive force, the one in The Fuji Seen from the Sea depicts a constructive energy. The two images, in some ways, complement each other: the former evokes the relentless power of nature, the latter celebrates its harmonious magnificence. <\/p>\n
Completing the exhibition is a special section recounting the extraordinary influence of Japanese art on Western artistic languages, From the mid-nineteenth century, in fact, the passion for Japan spread like wildfire throughout Europe, affecting the taste of the bourgeoisie in furnishings and fashion, but also the eye of artists, attentive to the novelties introduced by the prints of the Japanese masters.<\/p>\n
The confrontation with Japanese aesthetics radically altered Western creativity, introducing revolutionary elements, with very important outcomes, in the applied arts as much as in painting, from Monet to Whistler, from Van Gogh to Toulouse-Lautrec. <\/p>\n
In the video room, a film with a narrative and didactic slant, curated by Simona Bartolena, will accompany the visitor to discover Japonism in its different aspects.<\/p>\n
As with the previous exhibition, on this occasion a work by a contemporary author will dialogue with the theme of the exhibition. In the room dedicated to Japanism, Homage to Hokusai, a work by Armando Fettolini, an artist who has always looked to the floating world of the Ukyio-e as a source of inspiration, will be on display. <\/p>\n
