The Sanctuary of Madonna di Prada (from the dialect, “of the meadows”) is located outside the town of Mapello, a locality in Isola Bergamasca, an area bounded by the Brembo and Adda rivers.<\/p>\n
The shrine is nestled in the vast plain on the eastern slopes of Mt. Canto, still surrounded by natural scenery of high scenic value.<\/p>\n
Prada’s Marian shrine is introduced by a striking tree-lined avenue as long as 500 meters.<\/p>\n
An early oratory was probably built as early as the 14th century and then rebuilt in the late 1400s.<\/p>\n
Popular memory handed down the tradition that the Virgin appeared to a young girl, leaving as a sign a spring of prodigious water that healed numerous sick people.
\nThese extraordinary events ceased the moment a commoner dared to wash her dog with the blessed water.
\nIn the early 17th century devotion waned and it was decided to wall up the niche with the fresco of Our Lady.
\nDuring the work the scaffolding collapsed, and this was interpreted as a heavenly sign, and the fresco became an object of worship again. <\/p>\n
