THE PUPPET MUSEUM

THE PUPPET MUSEUM

Description

Since its inauguration on the 5thJuly 2019, the museum has been based on the top floor of the Palazzo della Provincia (Spazio Viterbi). It was created at the behest of the Benedetto Ravasio Foundation, which since 1993 has been committed to keeping alive the memory and vision of the great puppeteer from Bergamo after whom it is named.

The structure exhibits about 120 wooden puppet heads, all the significant pieces of Bergamo's historical production that are displayed, explained and "reinvented" to hand down an important part of Bergamo's cultural heritage to the new generations. Together with the Ravasio Fund, artefacts from the Angelini, Cortesi, Losa, Milesi and Scuri private collections are currently exhibited.

The museum is the crowning glory but also the starting point of a large project. In fact, to promote the study and appreciation of puppetry and its protagonists, the Foundation also takes care of targeted educational proposals for schools and numerous annual events. In 2020 the catalogue of the exhibited pieces was published, full of critical texts and illustrations.

EVENTS

The events organised by the museum and the Foundation include exhibitions, conferences, publications, professional training courses, festivals and expositions. It is an all-round commitment that involves professionals from the artistic, scientific and cultural sectors with the aim of bringing the public closer to this form of theatre.

The main events of each year are "Borghi e Burattini– Villages and Puppets" (summer festival dedicated to Puppetry, from the traditional to the modern experimental one) and "Gioppino and his brothers" (carnival and youth festival that offers wide-ranging shows, starting from the Lombard tradition). The latter together with the Arts and Unima Association - International Marionette Union.
