Colleoni Martinengo Castle in Cavernago

Colleoni Martinengo Castle in Cavernago

Description

The Colleoni Martinengo Castle is located in Cavernago, in the Bergamasco countryside, just 20 minutes from the city of Bergamo and less than an hour from Milan.

Its secular history began before the thirteenth century as a construction of unknown use. It then radically changed when it became the property of the famous leader Bartolomeo Colleoni(1470), who transformed it to make it militarily more defensible - a destiny shared by the nearby Malpaga Castle - but also more representative and liveable for his family. Inherited by his daughter Ursina and her husband Gherardo Martinengo-Colleoni, in the following centuries the building continued to have a certain strategic importance and underwent new modifications under the Giovannelli and Mazzotti counts.

The castle is still today a splendid private noble residence, inhabited by the Gonzagadi Vescovato family. With its square plan, the large courtyard with double loggias, the garden crossed by a stream and the Baroque style touches that have decorated it since the seventeenth century, it is a place to visit at least once in a lifetime. It can be reached along the avenue that starts from the church of San Marco Evangelista. To enter, pass over the bridge that surmounts the ancient moat, once full of water. In the external arcades and in the internal rooms you will find splendid frescoes, some by Giacomo Barbello di Lodi, others by Gian Battista Azzola.

The castle is open and can be visited during the Open Castles Days. If you want to experience all the excitement of a bygone era, don't miss it in the evening, in the light of the sunset and the torches that glimmer on the tower’s stone.

Cavernago Castle, a silver crown in the Golden Roll of Historical Residences, is also a splendid location for events. It can accommodate up to 250 guests and offers services such as reserved parking, scenic lighting with torches and lanterns, dance floor, music, games room equipped for children and free WIFI internet connection.

The location is available until 10.00pm for lunches and until 1.00am for dinners, with four menu proposals to customise, wedding cakes, drinks selected by sommeliers and prestigious mise en place.
