Bergamo is the perfect destination for a city break. In order not to be caught unprepared, we have compiled a list of 10 things that can absolutely not be missing from your travel itinerary.

  1. Go up to the Upper Town with the funicular. For 120 years, its two cars have passed through the walls of Bergamo connecting the contemporary centre to the medieval heart of the city. The view on the way is superb.
  2. Stroll along the 5km of Venetian Walls, a UNESCO heritage site. Walk all 5km of the Venetian Walls, protagonists of the unmistakable skyline of Bergamo. The sunset view is priceless! A secret: from the binoculars you will find along the way, you can see Milan!
  3. Visit a single building to meet all the masters of the Renaissance: the Accademia Carrara. Botticelli, Bellini, Raffaello, Titian, Lotto and the great portrait painter Moroni from Bergamo. Meet the greats of 16th century Italian art, they are all at the Accademia Carrara: its collection is among the most precious in Europe.
  4. Listen to Donizetti's music in his birthplace. Enter the childhood home of the great composer, you will be able to understand the essence of his story and listen to his works echoing among these ancient walls.
  5. Enjoy nature within walking distance of the city. An unusual way to get to know the green heart of Bergamo is to explore the protected area of the Parco dei Colli through staircases and paths that cross woods and terraces and offer unexpected views.
  6. Shake hands with a Nobel prize winner. The season of major events in the city never ends: meet the Nobel Prize winners at BergamoScienza, discover Piazza Vecchia transformed into a design garden and choose from a festival of narratives, philosophy, cinema and much more.
  7. Taste Stracciatella in the ice cream shop where it was invented. Cream ice cream with a melted chocolate crunch. How did the idea come about? To find out, we recommend you to go to “La Marianna” in Colle Aperto, the ice cream shop where this popular flavour was invented.
  8. Count the hundred chimes of the Campanone. Do not miss the appointment that has been continued for centuries: every evening at 10pm in Piazza Vecchia the large bell at the top of the civic tower rings 100 times, which once served to warn the inhabitants of the closing of the gates.
  9. Touch first-hand... good luck! A small lucky charm: on the gate of the Colleoni Chapel there is a coat of arms depicting the attributes of the leader Bartolomeo Colleoni. There are three of them and they are very shiny... it is said that rubbing them brings great satisfaction!
  10. Experience the city from dusk to dawn. Discover Bergamo by night: happy hour in the bars in Piazza Pontida with cocktails, delicious buffets and DJ sets. The evening continues in Borgo Santa Caterina, full of bars and music, an excellent base from which to move to dance in a club or enjoy a live concert.

Accompany it all with typical dishes such as polenta or casoncelli and local wines such as Valcalepio or Moscato di Scanzo and.... your holiday is served!

What are you waiting for!? Book your stay in complete autonomy and tranquility!
