In addition to the town's cycle path, ten minutes from Bergamo you can take the Parco del Serio cycle path. It starts in Seriate - just ... km from the city - and continues southwards, ending in Ghisalba, with a total distance of 10km.
The cycle path runs parallel to the Serio river, on the left orographic bank, and crosses a flat area surrounded by farmhouses and fields. The cycle path is totally unpaved. The gravelly ground and the area’s peculiar vegetation, will allow you to immerse yourself in a silent and natural landscape where time will seem to stop.
However, “special” meetings are not unusual, along this cycle path. During the transhumance period, you could come across sheep and goats which, led by their shepherd and his dogs, move from the mountain to the plain.
During the journey, it is absolutely recommended to make two detours. The first to Malpaga castle, a medieval castle that has remained intact over time, the historic residence of the Bergamasco leader Bartolomeo Colleoni; the second to the Church of San Lorenzo in Ghisalba, inspired by the Pantheon in Rome.
NB: The cycle path is exposed to the sun, it is not advisable to do it on hot summer days. Fill up with water at the Oasi Verde park in Seriate before leaving, as there are no fountains along the way.

La ciclabile ha inizio nell’area del Parco del Serio chiamata Oasi Verde, a Seriate, in via Lazzaretto (pic1). Attraversa il parco (con prudenza è solitamente molto frequentato da famiglie), svolta a sinistra (pic2) in direzione sud fino al viadotto oltre il quale troverai le indicazioni per proseguire sulla ciclabile (pic3).
Dopo pochi metri di pista tra alberi e cespugli, svolta a destra a ridosso di una cava (pic4). Da qui gli spazi si aprono e sarai circondato da ampli campi. Attraverserai un ponticello su un canale (pic5) per poi intraprendere una lieve discesa con il fiume che scorre poco lontano da te, sulla destra.
La ciclabile prosegue con lievi saliscendi passando a fianco di cumuli di pietre e bassi cespugli, un ambiente unico e particolare. Nella tranquillità della zona, il silenzio è interrotto solo dallo scorrere del vicino fiume Serio.
La ciclabile ha inizio nell’area del Parco del Serio chiamata Oasi Verde, a Seriate, in via Lazzaretto (pic1). La deviazione è assolutamente consigliata: dopo solo un chilometro di strada bianca ti troverai in un borgo rurale, di fronte ad un imponente Castello che, a metà del 1400, fu la residenza del condottiero bergamasco Bartolomeo Colleoni, la cui tomba è custodita a Bergamo Alta, dentro l’omonima Cappella. Accanto al Castello di Malpaga, sorge la Locanda dei Nobili Viaggiatori, ristorante e B&B, perfetto per una pausa riposante, magari nel patio, con affaccio sul Castello.
Ora riprendi la ciclabile e prosegui sempre verso sud lungo un’area con bassi cespugli e fondo sassoso (pic8) (pic9) che a breve ti conduce al termine della ciclovia nel paese di Ghisalba, dietro il depuratore (pic10).
Se lo desideri, puoi continuare la pedalata fino al centro storico di Ghisalba per visitare chiesa di San Lorenzo (pic11), progettata da Luigi Cagnola. Con la sua forma circolare e le possenti colonne si ispira al Pantheon di Roma.

Malpaga Castle was built by a Ghibelline before the advent of gun power. Thanks to the deep moat surrounding it, the Castle was unassailable over a long time: it came back to life in 1456, when the famous Captain General of the Venice Republic Bartolomeo Colleoni decided to buy Malpaga’s Borough for 100 gold ducats, aiming to turn it into his private house and the centre of his domain.
The Castle thus became the Commander’s headquarter and witnessed numerous outstanding historic events, hosting renowned figures paying homage to the Captain, such as Borso d’Este, Francesco Sforza’s sons, Charles II Duke of Burgundy and Christian I king of Denmark.
The Church of San Lorenzo is located in Ghisalba, a small town in the Bergamo plain, 18km from Bergamo, situated along the banks of the Serio river.
The church is a small jewel that, in appearance, is very similar to the famous Pantheon in Rome.
It was designed by the architect Luigi Cagnola, the same who built the Arch of Peace in Milan. The building, of pure neoclassical style, was finished and inaugurated in 1834.
The present temple stands on the area once occupied by a church built towards the end of the 5th century, on the ruins of the pagan temple dedicated to Jupiter.
The entrance to the temple is preceded by a portico with 14 columns. Once through the large door, you find yourself in a very enchanting circular room with a beam of light in the centre of the church. The sun beams from the dome and plays with the light and shadows created by the glow of the 12 large windows.
The church of San Lorenzo is located in the historic centre of Ghisalba, a short distance from the Serio Park cycle path which, going up the river, reaches Seriate through cultivated fields and low vegetation.
