GAMeC

Description

The Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art was founded in 1991 right in front of the Accademia Carrara Picture Gallery, in a restored fifteenth-century architectural complex, formerly intended as a monastery. The diversified programming - open to experimentation with contemporary languages and to multidisciplinarity, and at the same time anchored to the roots of the institution and its heritage - has made it into a multifaceted space that has been able to involve different audiences over the years. With its 1500 square metres of exhibition space, it is a place that welcomes contemporary art in all its forms: temporary personal and collective exhibitions by international artists, new and emerging projects and a rich calendar of collateral activities designed for different audiences are the strong point of the Gallery’s cultural policy, which is a dynamic place for comparison, analysis and cultural integration, in constant evolution.

Starting from 2018, thanks to a cultural agreement signed with the municipality of Bergamo, the Sala delle Capriate within the Palazzo della Ragione has become an external branch of GAMeC. A project of international importance that not only brings visual arts to the heart of the Upper Town, but will also builds a connection between Piazza Vecchia and Piazza Carrara.

Next to the full exhibition program, GAMeC is characterised by a rich calendar of side events dedicated to adults and children, promoted by the Gallery's Educational Services, which have been present in the area for more than twenty years and are involved daily in the design of projects and opportunities for approaching contemporary art.

Apart from the projects specifically dedicated to children and their parents, special activities are also carried out to form regular appointments, such as the Aspettando Santa LuciaWaiting for Santa Lucia workshop for the young ones. During the summer holidays, for more than ten years, the GAMeC laboratories have involved young artists with a rich calendar of activities conducted by museum educators and professionals.

Among the events dedicated to adults we mention the course Odyssey nell’Arte e Sfoghi, artistic-experiential workshops that allow the public to taste art in a dilated time and give themselves a space in which to experiment and give value to their creativity.

From May to September, on Sundays, the Gallery courtyard hosts Happening: happy hour, music and art in a special setting!
