To reach the Bergamasco mountains’ largest artificial lake you have to reach an altitude of 1862m in the Upper Seriana Valley. Here you will find Barbellino, that collects the waters coming from different valleys and the Natural Barbellino Lake.
Between 1926 and 1931, an enormous dam was built to regulate the energy produced in the nearby hydroelectric power station. Thanks to its opening, every summer, on predetermined dates, you can witness the grandiose spectacle of the Serio Waterfalls. About 10,000 cubic metres of water are discharged downstream, creating a triple jump of 315 metres, the highest in Italy.
Mountain lovers can enjoy pleasant trails that pass by the dam, including the one that leads to the Curò Mountain Refuge.
It is interesting to know that during the summer, at the base of the dam’s barrier, you can encounter numerous ibex that climb along the wall, defying gravity in search of saltpeter, a very useful salt in their diet.
