Pope JohnXXIII’s Birthplace

Pope JohnXXIII’s Birthplace

Description

During the evening of October 11th, 1962, after the first day of the Second Vatican Council, Pope XXIII looked out of his window in Saint Peter Square and gave a speech full of love. Among other things, he said “Returning home, you will find your children. Give a caress to your children and say: this is the caress of the Pope. You will find some tears to dry, say a good word: the Pope is with us, especially in times of sadness and bitterness. "

You can easily understand why he is one of the most-loved popes ever. He was and remained a humble man, yet able to carry out a deep change in catholic Church over just five years, thanks to the Second Vatican Council. His birthplace was turned into a small museum collecting numerous memorabilia: since Pope John XXIII became Saint in 2014, the visits and the pilgrimages to Sotto il Monte increased considerably

John XXIII's birthplace is a traditional farmhouse, featuring a wide porch and a wooden stair leading to the rooms. Angelo Roncalli, the future Pope, was born in one of these rooms on November 25th, 1881. The space is very modest, decorated with just a double bed, a dresser-desk and a painting of the Virgin Mary.
