Polacchi Tomb

Polacchi Tomb

Description

In this cave some metal and bone artefacts have been discovered, along with a bronze razor and some ceramics fragments: these items led us to suppose that it used to be a place of worship dedicated to water deities during the Bronze Age.

Let’s go explore a remote era and mysterious places such as caves, where our ancestors used to carry out their propitiatory rites and express their subjection and exaltation of natural phenomena. Graffiti, engravings and paintings: prehistoric man used these tools to try to get in touch with the divine and the unknown. The Polacchi Tomb, in Rota Imagna, is a place full of fascination and mysteries.

The discovery of numerous artefacts near the big stalagmites located in the back of the cave raised many questions and assumptions. Vases, bowls, decorated bronze blades, pendants made of bone. What appears to be certain is that the cave was used as a sacred place dedicated to the worship of waters. The abundant dripping and the stalagmite formations support this hypothesis.

The cavern is one of the many caves you can visit all over the Imagna Valley, the richest territory in Bergamo’s province for what concerns karst phenomena. In fact, there are about 250 known caves, along with numerous concretion formations, paleontological and archaeological findings. The objects found in the “Grotta dei Polacchi” are kept at the Archaeology Museum of Bergamo.
