Salto degli sposi

Description

One day of spring, in 1871, the Polish musician Massimiliano Prihoda – who had to perform at Milan’s Scala Theatre, went to visit his relatives in Dorga, Seriana Valley. The beauty of those places, especially the Presolana Pass, stroke him so much that he decided to come back with his wife, the painter Anna Stereat.

From time to time, the couple used to walk up to the overlook –the Belvedere -, an overhang located at the end of a trail in the forest: the local people got used to that foreign couple and started to call them “the spouses”.

However, for no apparent reason, one day of late September the couple went to the overhang after a storm: Anna painted her husband’s portrait, while he composed a short melody dedicated to his wife. Afterwards, the spouses throw themselves into the void, embraced, just like they were found the following day, at the foot of the cliff.
From then on, that place has been named “Salto degli Sposi – the Spouses’ Jump” and it’s a popular destination for couples that come here and throw flowers from the overhang, as a wish for their love.

Out of curiosity:

Apparently, Anna Stereat’s painting was found by chance in Mumbai at the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India. On the other hand, the music sheet has been recently discovered in the library of Bergamo’s Music Conservatory “Gaetano Donizetti”.
