Caves of Wonder

Caves of Wonder

Description

Gigantic stalactites, imposing stalagmites, white calcareous concretions creating stone curtains and magical environments: all this is right beneath your feet in the village of Zogno, Brembana Valley.

Usually, you should need the right equipment and speleology knowledge to explore this underground places: instead, the Caves of Wonders can be visited with ease.

Thanks to the access carved right above the main road and the visit itinerary, these caves are the perfect destination for an excursion outside Bergamo (they are located 20 km far from the city) or for an educational trip with your family.

The Caves of Wonders were discovered in 1932 and opened to the public in 1939, thus becoming the first touristic caves in Italy.

Originally, the entrance to this cave was through an opening called “Büs de la Marta” (“Hole of Marta”): afterwards, you had to go 60 meters down the vertical tunnels in order to reach the most interesting sites, full of incredible concretions.

In order to ease the access, a 73 meters long gallery was excavated, ending up near the Brembana Valley main road. No excuses: it just takes you a few minutes to enjoy this magical experience!

The volunteers of the speleology group “Grotte delle Meraviglie”, in Zogno, have been dealing with the maintenance and the investigation of this site for a few years: we recommend you to get in touch with them to arrange your guided tour.
