The motor vessels headed to the island leave from the villages of Sulzano and Sale Marasino. Once you got to Montisola the small fishermen’s boroughs and their boats, called naèt, will immediately enchant you.
Take a look around and explore the alleys: cars are not allowed to circulate in the island, so you can enjoy it at its best by bike or by bus. Montisola’s perimeter is 11 kilometres long: you can walk it in about 3 hours and a half, to admire the natural landscapes and the lovely views of Bergamo and Brescia lakesides.
However, the most spectacular observation point is on the highest place of the island: at 600 meters in height you can find the Santuario della Ceriola. It’s quite a demanding walk, but it is really worth it!
We believe that the best way to enjoy Montisola is walking all along its lakeside and visiting the main boroughs: it takes about three hours and a half on foot.
You can take the boat from Sulzano and arrive in Peschiera Maraglio. This is the most popular hamlet in Montisola: it has a lovely harbour full of naèt, the traditional fishermen’s boats. Moreover, you can also visit the interesting Fishing Museum and learn something more about the history, the techniques and the tools used by fishermen, whose activity keeps being very significant in the island.
Afterwards, you can also go to Carzano. Near the church of San Giovanni Battista you will find a beautiful park overlooking the island of Loreto: here you can have some rest and enjoy the lake.
The only camping ground of Montisola is located right here, along with the famous Ristorante Montisola, where you can taste the delicious local cuisine based on lake fish. Try some DOP extra virgin olive oil, some traditional local salami or the dried lake sardines preserved in oil.
Going on with your walk, you will reach the medieval village of Siviano after two kilometres: being located on a hill, the view of Bergamo lakeside from here is amazing. Now you are halfway: go south to Sensole and visit the majestic Stronghold called “Rocca degli Oldofredi” on top of a cliff, which was used to defend the island. Now you only miss one kilometre and a half to walk the enitre perimeter of Montisola!
