The oldest of the Italian Alpine Club refuges, located between Pizzo del Diavolo di Tenda, also called Cervino Bergamasco and Recastello, it is located at 2297m, situated under the Scaletta Pass on a grassy terrace with an unrivalled view.
Named after one of the pioneers of Orobic alpinism, Antonio Baroni, back in 1879, it was only a cabin, built as a shelter for miners heading to Valtellina, and a few years later, in 1890, it was used as a refuge during the climb to Pizzo Redorta by a group of members of the CAI Bergamo who had the idea of improving the old abandoned cabin and making it the refuge we know today.
The prize for highest altitude belongs to the Tagliaferri Refuge but Brunone certainly holds the title for the most difficult to reach.
Starting from Fiumenero, taking path 227 along a long trail with challenging variance in altitude you get to the shelter in 4 hours. It is the third stage of the Western Orobie Path and from here you can proceed to the Coca Refuge, it will take about 5 hours on foot following path 302.
It is an excellent base for excursions on the surrounding peaks: you can climb to Redorta (3038 m), along the Via del Canalone, or to Cima Soliva (2710 m) or Pizzo del Salto (2665 m).
Inside the structure there are 60 beds and as many places in the dining room.
