From 1815 to 1859, after the annexation to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Bergamo belonged to the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia.

This building, built in the years 1841-1846 in neo-classical style by Ferdinando Crivelli, was commissioned by the Austrian Government as the seat of the Imperial Royal Lyceum, Bergamo's highest institute of learning.

The high school, founded between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, served as the training centre for the local ruling class, which remained active in civic and professional life.
