Cisterna di Piazza Mascheroni

Cisterna di Piazza Mascheroni

Description

Built between 1605 and 1606, the fountain was fed by the water of a spring positioned near the Citadel, by rainwater and by the Magistrale aqueduct. The cistern located underneath the piazza could collect up to 1300 m3 of water.

The only element suggesting its presence is a simple well, whose structure recalls Venetian wells. The well was built on behest of the prefect Marino Cavallo in 1763, as evidenced by the engraving still visible on the left side. In the 1800s it was transformed into a fountain following the installation of a piston pump.
