Il Fontanone

Description

Together with the ones of Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe and Piazza Mascheroni, it constituted the cistern system able to guarantee a considerable water reserve to the population during dry seasons and in case of siege.

lt was fed by the water of the Magistrale aqueduct, and it was the largest cistern in the Upper Town. At the center of the long side of the cistern, a marble plaque remembers that the Fontanone was built in 1342 on a project by Giovanni da Corteregia and Giacomo da Correggio, during the rule of Giovanni and Luchino Visconti.
