Alpine Arboretum Gleno

Alpine Arboretum Gleno

Description

The Alpine Arboretum in Gleno was born from the happy intuition of an enthusiast of the sector (Piergiorgio Capitanio). Together, with the collaboration of expert connoisseur Manfredo Bendotti (better known as "Wizard"), they gave life to a precious exhibition where more than 100 arboreal species typically from the Scalve area have found home... but that’s not all!

It is a large green area (which stretches right to the foot of the Gleno valley, very close to the waters of the Povo stream) where they found "scalvini" tree specimens.

The Arboretum also has an educational area with a multimedia room (also for the screening of old films), a kiosk, a picnic area with a barbecue, a well, a vegetable garden and an area where coal is still being produced the old-fashioned way (poiat).

The Scalve Valley Wood Museum has a particularly rare and precious collection. Among the rooms used for the exhibition, 72 types of wood are on display. They are described and illustrated by as many cards that indicate, in addition to the plant’s scientific name, their main characteristics, times of flowering and "bearing" of the tree.

The aim us to provide an informative service about how the forest is still a vital reality of the mountain areas and can be an exceptional vehicle for spreading a place’s culture and tradition.

What makes the difference is the not only exhibition offered by the Arboretum. There are also sectors ranging from planting to harvesting vegetables and tubers that can be directly experimented, for example, the typical yellow valley potato, grown and harvested according to traditional methods.

The Arboretum is therefore very suitable for group or school visits. They can find a particularly beautiful site that lends itself to numerous activities.
