Donizetti Opera Festival

Description

The second edition of the Donizetti Opera Festival gives us two weeks dedicated to the great Bergamasco composer Gaetano Donizetti.

This year will be a valuable series of events dedicated to the discovery of the great nineteenth-century composer: in addition to the rarity of the young Donizetti, work by his maestro Simon Mayr will also be performed, the Requiem Mass in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the star tenor recital of belcanto, Juan Diego Flòrez, and the first melodrama of Rousseau’s Pygmalion, read by the anthropologist Marc Augé.

This year the festival will have an exceptional location, the Social Theatre in the Upper Town. An authentic gem of the city, the theatre is an extremely well suited location to listen to the works of Donizetti.

The festival will be composed of a series of celebrations to mark Donizetti’s birthday on November 29, the day of the Dies Natalis. On this date, Gaetano’s sacred repertoire will be on offer in the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica, which houses his tomb and also that of his maestro Mayr. Corrado Rovaris will conduct the Donizetti Opera and Chorus in the Requiem Mass, composed by Donizetti in 1835 for the death of Vincenzo Bellini.

The two rare Donizetti selections for this year will be “The mayor of Saardam”, a playful melodrama whose protagonist is Tsar Peter the Great, and “Pygmalion”, Donizetti’s first play that will be performed together with the farce of Giovanni Simone Mayr, “How orginial!”.

The festival will conclude with a prestigious recital, featuring the famous, world acclaimed tenor Juam Diego Flòrez.

All eyes will be on Bergamo for the rediscovery of these must-see works.

Tickets for all the festival events will be on sale from March 14. Tickets are available online at Donizetti.org or on vivaticket.it or at the Donizetti Theatre ticket office.
