It is located at 2020m, surrounded by numerous alpine lakes, uniquely beautiful crystal clear water reserves, at the centre of one of the most beautiful basins of the entire Orobic arch, where you can see all the Brembana Valley’s major peaks, such as the imposing Diavolo di Tenda.
It can be accessed from Carona along path 210, a largely dirt road with a fairly regular slope up to the Fregabolgia lake. From the lake, you just have to climb the top of the dam and skirt the lake, arriving at the refuge in about 3 hours. Also reachable from the village of Pagliari via path 247, commonly called the "summer path", all dirt and in the woods.
The refuge is an excellent base for hiking and mountaineering climbs of varying difficulty and for various ski mountaineering itineraries. There are numerous excursions to the surrounding lakes, there is the Curiosi Lake 30 minutes above the refuge; crossing the Fregaboglia dam you reach Lake Cabianca in 15 minutes and just below the refuge is Lake Rotondo, a panoramic terrace where you can admire numerous peaks, including Diavolo, Diavolino, Pizzo Poris, Grabiasca, Madonnino and Cabianca.
Every year between May and April the "Parravicini Trophy", the historic international ski mountaineering competition done in pairs, is held at the Calvi basin.
It is an impressive refuge: there are 85 beds in the property and the dining room can accommodate 70 people.
