The Museum and Treasure of the Cathedral opened in 2012 under the Sant’Alessandro Cathedral. Here, during the adjustment works in 2004, several archaeological remains have been discovered, dating back to the X Century B.C. up to the XVI A.D.: prehistoric settlements, Roman domus remains, ruins of the Paleochristian church and the Romanesque cathedral.
By means of this Museum, Bergamo’s Diocese aims to disclose the church’s history, showing its building phases and let the visitor enjoy the sacred and beautiful atmosphere of the old San Vincenzo Cathedral, by displaying numerous precious items of religious art.
Thanks to a laborious excavation campaign (2004 – 2012) in the Cathedral’s basement, archaeologists were able to discover an ancient Roman settlement, as well as the San Vincenzo early Christian Cathedral and the following Romanesque one, all surrounded by the Renaissance rebuilding carried out by the renowned architect Filarete.
The archaeological site’s map highlights the development stages of this area, which was inhabited already in the X Century B.C.
From the I Century B.C. to the IV A.D., the site hosted a Roman district located next to the Forum, crossed by a commercial street featuring small shops, workshops and beautifully decorated residential domus.
The Basilica’s size was imposing, indeed: it used to be the biggest religious building of the city, being at least 45 meters long and 24 meters wide.
The perimeter has been kept the same over the following building phases and coincides with the current church’s one, except for the eastern side of the presbytery.
The Museum of the Cathedral aims to narrate the complex history of this evolution, by means of archaeological remains and artistic objects.
The Cathedral’s Treasure is located in the heart of the itinerary, collecting the most precious items survived and safeguarded over the centuries.

Getting there
250 metres away (Piazza Mercato del Fieno): 1 reserved parking space with cobbled paving.
230 metres away: Upper Town Funicular Station; one of the two cabins is accessible with a stair lift.
Footpath from carpark and bus stops: uphill (slope 7-9%); paving in porphyry strips laid in a herringbone pattern; No tactile ground surface indicators.
Entering
Accessible entrance located about 120 metres from the main entrance (telephone to advise need to be opened), passing through the Cortile dei Canonici, reachable from via Mario Lupo; Ticket area not accessible.
A platform stair lift with a capacity of 250kg is available for access to the exhibition space.
Visiting
Exhibition path entirely practicable. The modest gradients are all connected with ramps.
The objects and explanatory panels are clearly visible.
There are no specific aids for the visually impaired, but some objects can be touched. The creation of 3D models of historic churches and audio guides is foreseen.
Using the bathroom
There is no public bathroom, but the Museum has an agreement with the public bathrooms in Piazza Vecchia. The staff bathroom can be used in an emergency: it is not accessible, but can be used.
