Colleoni Chapel

Colleoni Chapel

Description

It’s surely the most beautiful building in Bergamo.

Its façade is decorated with red and white marble, an authentic Italian Renaissance masterpiece. The interiors are a fantastic collection of artworks: the equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni, mercenary captain from Bergamo, the marble sarcophaguses, the exquisite tomb of his daughter Medea, the inlayed wooden desks.

It would takes us pages and pages to describe them all, that’s why we suggest you to enter the chapel and let this art universe take you over!

Fun fact: legend has it that touching the coat of arms on the Chapel’s gate at midnight brings good luck. Believe it or not, it can be a nice excuse to take a walk to the lovely Città Alta by night!

Bartolomeo Colleoni was one of the most famous mercenary captains in Italy. This fearless soldier spent his whole life fighting all over Italy, especially for the Republic of Venice.

His life is strictly related to Bergamo: he was born here, and he came back to his hometown at the peak of his power. Eventually, he was also buried here. Bergamo’s citizens really love this man and the legacy he left to the territory: numerous castles in the plain, a complex duct network and the beautiful chapel where he now rests.

However, don’t forget that he was also a strong and almost brutal man! For what concerns the Chapel, the Santa Maria Maggiore Church clergymen opposed to its construction. Bartolomeo solved the problem just like any other XV Century mercenary would have done: he sent his soldiers to destroy the old sacristy of the Church.

Whether it’s true or false, we can enjoy the beauty of this remarkable architecture masterpiece in any case.
