Bartolomeo Colleoni was one of the most famous mercenary captains in Italy. This fearless soldier spent his whole life fighting all over Italy, especially for the Republic of Venice.
His life is strictly related to Bergamo: he was born here, and he came back to his hometown at the peak of his power. Eventually, he was also buried here. Bergamo’s citizens really love this man and the legacy he left to the territory: numerous castles in the plain, a complex duct network and the beautiful chapel where he now rests.
However, don’t forget that he was also a strong and almost brutal man! For what concerns the Chapel, the Santa Maria Maggiore Church clergymen opposed to its construction. Bartolomeo solved the problem just like any other XV Century mercenary would have done: he sent his soldiers to destroy the old sacristy of the Church.
